SIBS has developed diverse ways such as master-doctoral program, laboratory rotation, excellent courses and the First Author Forum to enhance students’ ability of independent thinking, self-study and innovative practice. In 2008, Bio2000 Course of SIBS was honored with the special prize of CAS Education Achievement Award.
By the end of 2015, there were 1,947 graduate students and 272 postdoctoral fellows in training at SIBS. In 2015, graduate students from SIBS won a wide array of scholarships and awards. For instance, fifty-four students won national scholarships, twelve were awarded the CAS President’s Scholarship, six received CAS Outstanding Doctoral Dissertations Award, 12 were honored with the Outstanding Graduate Students Award by CAS and 13 were honored with the Outstanding Graduate Students Award by Shanghai city.

"The First Author Forum - the journey of discovery" was developed from Sep. 2004 for graduates, who published papers in high-profile journals as the first author, sharing their experiences.
The Postdoc Training Course was set to help postdocs pursue excellence in research from Feb. 2009.

The postdoctoral research program at SIBS was consecutively named a National Excellent Postdoctoral Research Program in 2005, 2010 and 2015. This selection is made every five years by China’s Ministry of Human Resource and Social Security.
