The Shanghai Key Laboratory of Molecular Andrology (SLMA) was established in May 2008, which was approved by the Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality. The director of the laboratory is Prof. Yonglian Zhang, and 11 scientists were invited as members of academic committee, which was headed by Prof. Degui Chen. SLMA is a member laboratory of The Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology (IBCB), Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences (SIBS), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
SLMA will target the basic researches on male reproductive health, which focuses on the molecular basis of male birth control and male diseases. Based on the analysis of the layout and the status quo of this field in Shanghai and China, SLMA chose sperm maturation during the transition through epididymis as the object of male birth control, and selected reproductive abnormalities and prostate diseases as the topic of male diseases. These studies are strategically important subjects for both quality improvement and quantity control of population in China.
At present, there are four research groups in SLMA: molecular mechanisms of sperm maturation in epididymis, histone modification and function, germ cells & embryonic development, and molecular mechanisms of miRNA-mediated gene regulation. The members of SLMA include a member of Chinese Academy of Science, a chief scientist for the 973 Program projects, and a member of 100 Talents Program of The Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Researches of SLMA are currently supported by 18 nationwide and Shanghai-based funds, including 973 projects. Up to the end of 2008, we have already achieved 4 representative scientific findings, published 18 SCI papers (including two papers on PNAS), and established facilities for sperm function tests and zebrafish microinjection. SLMA members received the first prize of Shanghai Natural Science Awards in 2007 and the second prize of National Natural Science Awards in 2008.
Inheriting the spirit of pioneers of Chinese biology -dedication, truth-seeking, unity, and endeavor, SLMA will devote to the discipline of reproductive health.
